What to expect at a private tattoo studio in Sherman Oaks

A private tattoo studio offers a different rhythm from a busy walk-in shop. At Kastana Tattoo in Sherman Oaks, every visit is scheduled so the room, the artist and the time are prepared for you.

Before your appointment

Your experience begins with a booking request. Share the idea, approximate size, placement and reference images that explain the feeling or detail you like. References guide the conversation; they are not copied. Your artist uses them to understand your taste and design something that belongs to your body.

Once the direction is clear, the studio confirms timing, an estimate and anything specific you should know. Because the studio works by appointment, there is no walk-in queue and no pressure to rush a decision.

A calm, one-on-one setting

Private does not mean formal. It means fewer interruptions, a quieter room and space to speak openly about placement, comfort or nerves. You can ask for a pause, adjust your position or take time to look at the stencil before anything begins.

Wear clothing that gives easy access to the tattoo area while keeping you comfortable. If the placement is personal, bring a layer or cover-up that helps you feel at ease. A support person may be possible when arranged beforehand, depending on the room and session.

Design, stencil and placement

Your artist will review the final direction with you and place a stencil or draw directly on the skin when the piece calls for it. This is the moment to check scale, balance and how the design moves with your body. Small placement changes are normal. Speak up until it feels right.

Hygiene and the session

The station is cleaned and prepared before you arrive. Single-use needles and protective barriers are opened or placed for the appointment, and the artist follows professional cross-contamination procedures throughout the session. You will complete a consent form and may be asked for identification before tattooing begins.

During the tattoo, communicate. Pain changes by placement and by person, and there is no prize for staying silent. Short breaks, water and a position adjustment can make a long session much more manageable.

After the tattoo

Your artist will clean and cover the tattoo, then explain aftercare for the specific bandage and your skin. Follow those instructions, keep the area clean, avoid soaking and direct sun while it heals, and contact the studio if anything feels unusual.
