Matching tattoos for couples, friends and siblings

Matching tattoos work best when the design is simple, personal and built to hold up on two different bodies. Choose a symbol that still means something on its own, size it so fine lines have room to age, and have the same artist tattoo both pieces so the linework truly matches. Couples, friends and siblings all follow the same rules.

A matching tattoo is a small promise you both wear every day. Here is how we approach matching tattoos at our private studio in Sherman Oaks, from the first idea to the healing weeks after.

Matching half-sun and half-moon tattoos on two forearms

What makes a good matching tattoo design?

The best matching tattoos are designs each person would choose even if they were getting it alone. A symbol you both love will feel right in any season of the relationship. A name or a date can carry a lot of weight, so think about how it will read years from now.

A few questions help:

  • Does the design mean something to each of you, not just to the pair?
  • Is it simple enough to read clearly at a small size?
  • Would you both be happy seeing it every morning?

Shared places, a plant from a family garden, an animal you both love, a small object with a story behind it: these tend to age well in meaning as well as in skin.

Should matching tattoos be identical or complementary?

Matching tattoos come in two main forms. Identical tattoos are the same design on both people. Complementary tattoos are two halves that complete each other, like the half-sun and half-moon above, which only show the full picture when the two forearms line up.

There is a third option that works beautifully for siblings and friends: the same subject in the same style, with each person choosing their own version. Two different flowers drawn with the same fine line hand, for example, read as a set without being copies. Our resident artist Ariane draws soft botanical linework that suits this kind of pairing.

How big should matching fine line tattoos be?

Fine line tattoos need a little room to stay crisp. Very small designs with lines packed close together are the first to soften and blur as skin ages, so we size each tattoo for the detail it carries. Our guide on whether fine line tattoos fade explains why.

Two bodies are rarely the same size. A design that sits perfectly on one person's wrist can look cramped on a larger forearm. Matching by proportion, rather than by exact millimeters, often makes the pair look more alike in person.

Where should matching tattoos go?

The simplest choice is the same spot on both people, which makes photos and that moment of lining them up easy. Forearms and upper arms are popular for good reason: flat, stable skin holds fine lines well and heals with little fuss.

You can also split placements. One person might want theirs visible on the forearm while the other prefers the ribs or the back of the arm. The design still matches, and each of you gets a spot that suits your life.

Hands and fingers are more demanding. Constant washing and friction soften fine lines faster there, and hand and finger work often needs a touch-up. Agne's hand and finger touch-ups are $50 within one month. Our guide to the best placements for a fine line tattoo goes through each area.

How do you book matching tattoos at Kastana?

Kastana is private and appointment only, with no walk-ins, so matching tattoos take a little planning. Send your idea through our booking form and say it is a matching set. Include both placements, rough sizes and any references.

The artist replies with thoughts, a quote and dates. A non-refundable deposit holds the appointment and goes toward the final price. Responses take a few business days, so start early if you are planning around an anniversary, a birthday or a sibling visiting Los Angeles.

On the day, both people need to be 18 or older with a valid federal or state ID. Every design is custom and drawn for you, and having one artist tattoo both pieces keeps the line weight and spacing consistent.

What if the relationship changes?

Relationships change, and so do the people in them. Choosing a design with meaning that stands on its own is the kindest thing you can do for both of your future selves. A shared symbol can become a memory of a good time rather than a reminder of an ending. If you are unsure, take a few more weeks before you book. A good tattoo is worth waiting for.

How do you care for matching tattoos while they heal?

Both tattoos follow the same aftercare. Second-skin film stays on for 2 to 3 days. After that, wash twice a day for two weeks with clean hands, warm water and fragrance-free, non-antibacterial soap, pat dry and apply a thin layer of fragrance-free, alcohol-free moisturizer. No sunscreen on a fresh tattoo; cover it with clothing instead. No swimming, baths, sauna or hot yoga while healing.

Each body heals at its own pace, so do not worry if one tattoo flakes a few days before the other. Plan the two healing weeks together, and skip the beach trip right after your appointment. Our fine line tattoo aftercare guide covers every step, and you can see more of Agne's paired and fine line work at whoisagne.com.

FAQ

Can two people get matching tattoos on the same day?

You can ask for that in your booking request. The artist will reply with available dates and a quote for the set.

Do matching tattoos have to be the same size?

No. Sizing each tattoo to the person's body and placement usually makes the pair look more alike than copying exact measurements.

Can we get matching tattoos from different artists?

You can, but fine line work shows each artist's hand clearly. One artist tattooing both pieces is the most reliable way to get lines that truly match.

What are good matching tattoo ideas for siblings?

Symbols from a shared childhood work well: a flower from a family garden, a small animal, a place you grew up. The same subject drawn in two personal versions is another lovely option.

How much do matching tattoos cost?

The artist quotes after seeing your idea. Agne's minimum is $300.
