Tattoo deposits explained: why private studios ask for one

A tattoo deposit is a payment you make to hold an appointment before your session. At Kastana in Sherman Oaks, the deposit is non-refundable and goes toward the final price of your tattoo, so it is not an extra fee. It reserves the artist's time, covers design work that starts before you arrive and confirms that both sides are committed to the date.

Most explanations stop there. This guide also covers what the deposit actually pays for at a private studio, what happens if your plans change and the simple habits that keep you from losing it.

What does a tattoo deposit actually pay for?

At a private, appointment-only studio, your booking blocks real time. When an artist holds a slot for you, that slot is not offered to anyone else. Kastana does not take walk-ins, so there is no one waiting at the door to fill a gap if an appointment falls through.

The deposit also covers work that happens before your session. Every design at Kastana is drawn for the person getting it. Sketching, sizing and adjusting a custom piece takes time, and that time is spent whether or not the appointment goes ahead.

So a tattoo deposit does two jobs. It protects the artist's calendar and design time, and it gives you a confirmed date with the artist you chose.

Is a tattoo deposit refundable at Kastana?

No. The deposit is non-refundable. The moment you book, the artist sets aside the time and begins thinking through your design, and neither of those can be handed back.

The good news is that a deposit is not lost money when things go to plan. It is applied to the final price of your tattoo, and you pay the balance after the session. If your quote covers the full piece, the deposit is simply the first part of that total.

How does the deposit fit into booking at Kastana?

Booking follows the same simple steps for every client:

  1. Send your idea, references, placement and approximate size through our booking form.
  2. The artist replies with thoughts on the design, a quote and available dates. Replies take a few business days.
  3. You pay a non-refundable deposit to hold the date you choose.
  4. You come in for your session and pay the remaining balance afterward.

For Agne's appointments, the deposit can be paid by card or Zelle, and the balance by cash, Zelle or Apple Pay. If you want to understand how the quote itself is put together, our guide to fine line tattoo cost in Los Angeles walks through size, detail, placement and time.

What happens to your tattoo deposit if you need to reschedule?

Rescheduling at Kastana requires a new deposit. The original deposit does not move to the new date.

That can feel strict, but it follows the same logic as the deposit itself. Once a date is held and a design is underway, that time cannot be offered to someone else at short notice. The most reliable way to avoid paying twice is to choose a date you are confident about before you confirm.

How do you avoid losing your tattoo deposit?

Most lost deposits come from small, avoidable things. A few habits help:

  • Choose a date with breathing room. Avoid squeezing a session between travel, a big deadline or a day you might be called away.
  • Stay out of the sun the week before. Sunburned skin means rescheduling, and rescheduling means a new deposit. In Los Angeles that is easy to underestimate, so cover the area on long drives, hikes and beach days.
  • Bring a valid ID. Clients must be 18 or older with a valid federal or state ID.
  • Prep your skin. Moisturize daily, stay hydrated and exfoliate the day before.
  • Read the artist's reply carefully. Check the date, time and quote before you pay so there are no surprises later.

Our guide on how to prepare for a fine line tattoo appointment covers the rest of the prep, from references to what to wear.

What should you ask before paying any tattoo deposit?

Wherever you book in Los Angeles, a few questions are worth asking before money changes hands:

  • Does the deposit go toward the final price, or is it a separate fee?
  • Is it refundable, and under what conditions?
  • What happens if you need to reschedule?
  • Which payment methods are accepted for the deposit and the balance?
  • Have you seen the artist's healed work, not just fresh photos?

At Kastana, the answers are short. The deposit goes toward your tattoo, it is non-refundable, rescheduling needs a new deposit and the payment methods are listed above. You can also get to know our artists before you commit, from Agne to our resident fine line and botanical artist Ariane.

If anything about your booking is unclear, email hello@kastanatattoo.com or call (424) 422-0046 before you pay. It is always easier to ask first.
